THE PROJECT
The NINSOLA project will focus on the recovery and transformation of by-products from the Piedmontese hazelnut processing chain, such as shells, perisperm, leaves, flour and oil, which will undergo grinding, traditional and innovative extraction and chemical characterisation to identify the components of interest to the markets involved. In particular, the extracts obtained from leaves and perisperm will be used as a substrate for subsequent processing (fermentation, lipophilisation and derivatisation using green chemistry technologies) to obtain green ingredients with high added value for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical markets. The granules and flours derived from the shells, the oil extracted from the perisperm, the polyphenols and the purified lignin will instead be used in sustainable applications for the rubber market, replacing standard raw materials such as antioxidants and plasticisers.
Finally, the sustainability of the project will be guaranteed by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.
